BLACKPONGO camp kitchen planning guide with camping table

Camp Kitchen Setup: A Practical Planning Guide

A useful camp kitchen is compact, stable and easy to keep organized. Planning the work area before the trip reduces forgotten items and helps separate heat, food preparation, washing and storage.

Plan four simple zones

  1. Preparation: a clean, stable surface for ingredients and utensils.
  2. Cooking: permitted outdoor heat equipment with clear space around it.
  3. Cleaning: water, biodegradable cleaning supplies where permitted and a way to collect waste water.
  4. Storage: protected food, cookware and rubbish arranged according to campsite rules.

The zones do not need to be large. They need to prevent raw ingredients, clean equipment, heat and waste from becoming mixed together.

Choose an appropriate work surface

A camp table can keep preparation and frequently used items off the ground. Compare surface area, unfolded height, frame material, packed dimensions and the load guidance supplied with the product.

Keep cookware matched to the menu

Choose cookware according to the number of people and the meals actually planned. A compact pot and kettle system may be enough for hot drinks and simple meals; larger or more varied menus require more preparation space and cleaning capacity.

Before departure, confirm that the cookware, handles, lids and utensils work with the permitted heat source. Follow all instructions supplied with both the cookware and cooking equipment.

Place heat equipment safely

Follow local fire restrictions and manufacturer guidance. Use cooking equipment only in permitted, well-ventilated outdoor areas on a stable surface. Keep it away from tents, dry vegetation and other flammable materials, and never leave heat or flame unattended. Allow equipment to cool completely before packing.

Plan water, cleaning and waste

  • Carry enough safe water for drinking, cooking and required cleaning.
  • Keep hand-cleaning supplies accessible before food preparation.
  • Store food according to local wildlife guidance.
  • Collect all packaging and rubbish.
  • Dispose of waste water only as campsite rules allow.

Pack in order of use

Keep setup items together: table components, cookware, utensils, ignition equipment where lawful, cleaning supplies and food storage. A simple checklist attached to the storage container makes it easier to verify the kitchen before every trip.
